This is especially important for pain medications and antibiotics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pill case or dosing log can be helpful in preventing missed doses. If you do miss a dose, don\u2019t double up, but rather continue on the original dosing schedule as normal. We may have alternatives or suggestions to help you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giving Your Pet Medication Orally<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most medications prescribed to pets are oral, in the form of liquid, tablets, or capsules. Some pets very easily take these medications mixed in something tasty like cheese, peanut butter, or canned food. Others, though, are not so easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving your pet medication orally can be a little tricky sometimes. Certainly try to get them to take it voluntarily. Some tricks to try include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use small amount of a very tempting treat\u2014too much makes it easy for your pet to pick through<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenies.com\/products\/dog\/pill-pockets\">commercial treats designed for easy for pill administration<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Administer the medication quickly before your pet has time to think about it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t allow your pet to see you preparing the medication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give three treats in quick succession\u2014the first plain, the second hiding the medication, and the third as a quick distraction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give small amounts of the same special treat at other times to decrease suspicion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, though, for reliable administration, pets will need to be manually medicated. You may need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsyourdog.com\/news\/the-trick-to-giving-your-dog-liquid-medicine-via-oral-syringe\/\">give your dog liquid via syringe<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetmed.wsu.edu\/outreach\/Pet-Health-Topics\/categories\/procedures\/dogs\/giving-oral-medications-to-your-dog\">pill by opening the mouth<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetmed.wsu.edu\/outreach\/Pet-Health-Topics\/categories\/procedures\/cats\/giving-oral-medications-to-your-cat\">Cats may be given oral medications<\/a> in a similar manner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Types of Medications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes other medications must be administered. These might include eye medications, ear medications for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/have-you-heard-ear-problems-in-pets-can-be-managed\/\">ear problem<\/a>, or topical skin medications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often the key to success is rewarding your pet after each medication session for a job well done! Pick a special treat and be consistent with giving it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/positive-vs-negative-dog-training-key-concepts-for-dog-owners\/\">Positive reinforcement training<\/a> is very effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/hospitals\/pharmacy\/consumer-clinical-care-guidelines-animals\/administering-eye-medications-your-pet\">administering eye medications<\/a>, it often works best to work from behind your pet using one hand to support the chin and the other to steady the bottle over the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texvetpets.org\/article\/giving-ear-medications-uncooperative-pets\/\">administering ear medications<\/a> go slow and be gentle. Many times if pets are resistant to this, they are painful or anticipating pain. Be sure to handle your pet\u2019s ears when there is not anything actively causing them discomfort to build confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are key in helping your pet to get better when something is wrong.
