These tips from the experts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/\">Beverly Hills Veterinary Associates<\/a> can help you identify poisonous foods so you can share foods safely with your furry companion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First: Two Simple Rules that Apply to All Food Sharing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rule No. 1: Your cat or dog should get the nutrients they need from a quality, species-specific diet. People food should amount to no more than 5 percent of your pet\u2019s caloric intake on a daily basis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rule No. 2: If it\u2019s bad for us, it\u2019s probably bad for them. Too much fat or sugar can damage the pancreas and lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/of-all-the-dangers-of-the-dinner-table-pet-pancreatitis-reigns-supreme\/\">pet pancreatitis<\/a>. Not to mention, too much unfamiliar food can give your pet an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/pet-tummy-trouble\/\">upset tummy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Never Give the Following Foods to Pets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following list from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\">ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center<\/a> outlines the poisonous foods and ingredients that should never be shared with pets:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Alcohol: <\/strong>Never let pets sample food or beverages containing alcohol. Period.<\/li><li><strong>Avocado: <\/strong>This food can cause cardiovascular damage and death in birds and rabbits, and edema in donkeys, horses, and ruminants.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Chocolate, Coffee and Caffeine: <\/strong>All contain methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and even death.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Citrus: <\/strong>Citrus<strong> <\/strong>in significant amounts can cause central nervous system depression. Small amounts may lead to minor stomach upset.<\/li><li><strong>Coconut and Coconut Oil: <\/strong>Use caution with these foods as they could cause<strong> <\/strong>stomach upset or diarrhea. Do not give pets coconut water, as it is high in potassium.<\/li><li><strong>Grapes and Raisins: <\/strong>These fruits can cause kidney failure.<\/li><li><strong>Macadamia Nuts:<\/strong> These nuts can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Other <strong>nuts<\/strong>, including almonds, pecans, and walnuts, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially pancreatitis.<\/li><li><strong>Milk and Dairy: <\/strong>Dairy products<strong> <\/strong>can cause diarrhea or tummy upset.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Onions, Garlic, and Chives: <\/strong>These can give cats<strong> <\/strong>gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to anemia. Dogs are at risk if they consume a large amount.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Raw\/Undercooked Meat: <\/strong>These can contain<strong> <\/strong>Salmonella and E. coli.<\/li><li><strong>Raw Eggs: <\/strong>Uncooked eggs can cause skin and coat problems.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Bones:<\/strong> Bones pose a choking hazard and can puncture your pet\u2019s digestive tract.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Salty Foods: <\/strong>Too much sodium can cause<strong> <\/strong>vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures, and even death.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Xylitol: <\/strong>This sweetener that can cause liver failure. Read labels on prepared foods carefully.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Yeast Dough:<\/strong> Dough can rise and cause gas to accumulate in your pet\u2019s digestive system, which can cause the stomach to bloat and twist, becoming a life threatening emergency.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foods You Can Safely Share<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let your pets sample bite-sized portions of the following foods in moderation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Veggies<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Fruit<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Popcorn<\/strong> (unsalted)<\/li><li><strong>Peanut butter <\/strong>(that does not contain xylitol)&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Cheese <\/strong>(small amounts only)&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Meats <\/strong>(small amounts of lean, cooked meats free of bones or seasonings)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing snacks with your pet can be a bonding experience, but it\u2019s important to do so safely.
