Floppy or pricked, cropped or natural, they are pretty adorable and oh-so-soft to rub. They do need some attention from time to time, though, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/\">Beverly Hills Veterinary Associates<\/a> wants to share everything we know about proper dog ear care for attentive pet owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bits-and-pieces\">Bits and Pieces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we can delve into how to care for your pet\u2019s ears, we first have to understand a bit about what they do and why they are important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dog\u2019s ear serves a few very important functions. Besides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/hear-hear-pet-hearing\/\">hearing<\/a>, the inner parts of ears are also integral in maintaining balance and orientation. Taking good care of them can help keep your pet in tip-top shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ear is made up of a few parts that the pet owner should understand. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The pinna (outer ear flap)<\/li><li>The external ear canal (opening and canal leading into the ear)<\/li><li>The middle ear (behind the eardrum)<\/li><li>The inner ear (inside the skull)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When caring for your dog\u2019s ear, you are focusing on the pinnae and the external ear canal. It can be difficult to even see the middle and inner ear beyond the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and problems in this area often need to be identified by things like a CT scan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dog-ear-care-tips\">Dog Ear Care Tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dog ear care is honestly pretty straightforward. Paying just a little attention and time goes a long way.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Observe your pet\u2019s ears\u2014<\/strong>Take some time once or twice a week to peek at your pet\u2019s ears. A baseline on what\u2019s normal is a pretty powerful tool. Make a mental note about redness, soreness, odor, and any discharge.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Get in the routine\u2014<\/strong>A weekly (or more often if recommended by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/about-us\/veterinarians-staff.html\">our veterinarians<\/a>) ear cleaning session as part of normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/more-than-just-a-pretty-face-the-art-of-home-pet-grooming\/\">home grooming<\/a> is a great opportunity to spend time with your pet and promote good ear hygiene.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Make cleaning easy and effective\u2014<\/strong>Be sure to use a commercial ear cleaning solution to help break down wax and support a proper ear pH. Gather supplies ahead of time to set yourself up for success. Use a helper if needed and work in a well lit area of your home.
