We truly care about our clients and patients, and we want to ensure the holiday season is full of all the good stuff: gingerbread houses, snuggling with your four-legged friend, laughter, spending time with family, and much more. That\u2019s why we\u2019re reviewing a few of our most important holiday pet safety tips and tricks.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real Versus Artificial<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holidays are brimming with lovely greenery. It\u2019s all so beautiful \u2013 but some of it is potentially toxic to your pet. While we understand the desire for real plants this time of year, be careful what you bring inside your home. Never leave the following at ground-level:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poinsettia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mistletoe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet displays signs of poisoning, such as vomiting or diarrhea, don\u2019t hesitate to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/contact-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We can barely contain ourselves upon seeing one up close, and the same is probably true for your <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/pet-care\/puppy-kitten-wellness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puppy or kitten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or even a seasoned <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/pet-care\/senior-pet-care.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). If you have a real tree, consider the following holiday pet safety tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anchor your tree to the wall or ceiling. It\u2019s not uncommon for pets to attempt to climb to the top of a tree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid hanging breakable glass or ceramic ornaments at the bottom of your tree. An enthusiastic tail could lead to broken shards on the floor, and your pet could be tempted to lick them up or step on them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cover the tree stand with an extra tree skirt or other deterrent. A thirsty pet could be poisoned from the fire-retardants, pesticides, or preservatives that leak into the water from the tree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinsel is so delicate and simple, but it can wreak havoc on a pet\u2019s GI tract, possibly leading to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/veterinary-services\/veterinary-surgery.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For your pet\u2019s safety, it\u2019s best to exclude it from your holiday display.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Party Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosting family and friends this year? If your pet is perfectly at ease with chaos and unpredictability, feel free to integrate him or her into the festivities. Any signs of unrest (e.g., increased vocalization, aggression, counter surfing, begging for food, darting out the door) may warrant some alone time in a quiet area of your home. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water, his or her favorite bedding, and some toys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also consider <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-boarding-grooming.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boarding your pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with us. A home away from home is always an option for you and your pet during the holidays, and we pride ourselves on taking complete care of our guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Holiday Pet Safety Tips<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For your pet\u2019s general <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-wellness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s a good rule of thumb to not offer or allow access to any of these dangerous people foods:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xylitol (common sugar substitute)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macadamia nuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapes or raisins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncooked dough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich, fatty foods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, include your pet in the festivities with these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/just-one-bite-understanding-pet-safe-foods-and-avoiding-toxins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet-safe foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while lovely holiday candles help set the mood for the meal and other festivities, you\u2019ll want to be sure to keep them safely out of your pet\u2019s reach. \u00a0Never leave a burning candle unattended!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to yours, we wish you a very happy holiday season.
