Dog Breeds By Traits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mixed breeds can have some of one or both parent\u2019s physical characteristics\u2014or even none at all! But a close inspection of your dog\u2019s physical traits gives us a place to start with mixed-breed dog<\/a> identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take it From the Top<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All dogs fall into one of three head shapes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dolichocephalic breeds<\/strong> have skulls that are long and slender. Think greyhounds, collies, Afghan hounds, and setters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brachycephalic breeds<\/strong> have a tell-tale flat face with extremely short snouts. Pugs, bulldogs, and boxers are all considered Brachy breeds. Their stubby noses make them predisposed to breathing difficulties (making air travel<\/a> unsafe), eye disorders<\/a>, and exercise intolerance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mesaticephalic breeds<\/strong> (also called Mesocephalic) are somewhere in the middle, with medium-sized heads that are fairly proportional in length and width. Think labradors<\/a>, beagles, cocker spaniels, and dalmatians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ear Size and Shape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Does your dog have pointy ears<\/a> that stand upright, like a German shepherd, or long, floppy ears like dachshunds (wiener dogs)? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
