The process takes a considerable amount of time, energy, money, and foresight to truly do it right. And while it\u2019s 100% worth it, it\u2019s really not something you can thrust on someone else. This holiday season, we\u2019d like to promote alternatives to the concept of giving a pet as a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logic and Sound Reasoning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On one hand, who wouldn\u2019t want to receive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/a-home-for-the-holidays-what-to-know-about-holiday-pet-adoption\/\"> an adorable pet for the holidays<\/a>? It\u2019s a huge thrill with enormous impact, but there are some serious considerations for why one should never give a pet as a gift, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recipient is too young to provide for the animal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They might not have the time or money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/tips-for-choosing-the-best-dog-breed-for-your-lifestyle\/\"> living situation or lifestyle<\/a> cannot accommodate the needs of a pet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They simply might not be able to connect with the gift-giver\u2019s choice of pet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth noting that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/what-to-consider-before-getting-a-pet-for-the-holidays\/\"> giving a pet as a gift to a child <\/a>can send the wrong message about animals to the recipient. Without the planning or preparation required for successful adoption, receiving a pet as a gift can imply that the animal is an object, like other gifts bought, sold, and exchanged during the holidays. We always promote the concept of \u201cAdopt, Don\u2019t Shop\u201d and this definitely applies during the holidays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the novelty wears off and the reality of responsibility sets in, a pet can be perceived as disposable or sidelined. This type of adoption can end in surrendering or re-homing the pet in a choice that could have been prevented. The animal hasn\u2019t asked for this terrible outcome and is not deserving of potential homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Pet Is Forever<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all pet adoptions work out, but they have a better chance of success when everyone is on the same page. If you\u2019re considering giving a pet as a gift to your own child, please know that it will always come down to you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/responsible-pet-owner\/\">make all the right choices for the animal<\/a>. Ongoing medical attention, great nutrition, disease prevention and so much more round out the rather long list of pet care needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Else You Can Do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of giving a pet as a gift, there are other wonderful ways you can share a loved one\u2019s interest in animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Donate to a shelter or rescue in your loved one\u2019s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give them a gift certificate to a shelter or rescue when it\u2019s time for them to consider adoption. Your contribution can help offset any adoption fees.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchase a gift card to a local pet store for them to buy food, litter, toys, etc. when they are able to adopt the pet of choice. You can also get vouchers to groomers or trainers if applicable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponsor a farm animal in the name of your loved one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/little-paws-big-hearts-how-volunteering-with-your-pet-can-change-a-life\/\">Volunteer with your loved one <\/a>at a shelter or rescue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Pet as a Gift<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing life with a pet is always a worthwhile endeavor, but it isn\u2019t always easy or affordable.
