You envisioned late nights of Netflix bingeing with your cat curled up in your arms. But your first attempt at cuddling resulted in a few swift kicks from her back legs before she bolted from the room. Will your dream of holding your cat ever become a reality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all honesty, some cats like to be held and some prefer their personal space, but the following tips from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/about-us\/veterinarians-staff.html\">our team<\/a> can improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/human-animal-bond\/\">the bond you have with your cat<\/a> whether or not she chooses to nap on your lap.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dos and Don\u2019ts of Holding Your Cat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your first attempts at affection are met with rejection, don\u2019t take it personally. It\u2019s probably just how your cat is wired. Cats that weren\u2019t properly socialized as kittens or those that haven\u2019t spent much time around humans tend to be skittish when facing new situations. The key to putting a bashful cat at ease is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/who-or-what-do-cats-hate-and-why\/\">meet her where she is<\/a>\u2014not where you want her to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The WRONG Way to Hold a Cat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your cat could talk, she would tell you the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cats aren\u2019t fans of sneak attacks, so don\u2019t approach her from behind.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t scruff her, as this will trigger her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/stress-in-cats\/\">stress response<\/a>.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t leave her back legs dangling unsupported.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t try to pick her up if her ears are facing backward or if her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/a-cats-tale-what-your-cats-tail-is-telling-you\/\">tail position<\/a> indicates fear or aggression.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t cradle her on her back unless you know she likes belly scritches.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t force her to be held unless it\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/pet-safety\/\">emergency situation<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Hold a Cat\u2013The RIGHT Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some breeds are more receptive to snuggles, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/pet-allergies\/\">hairless Sphynx cats<\/a> and ragdolls, while others, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/what-are-the-smartest-cat-breeds\/\">Bengal<\/a>, remain wild at heart. Some cats never warm up to the idea of being held, but knowing how to hold a cat properly is a step in the right direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Let her make the first move. Is she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/lost-in-translation-explaining-why-and-how-cats-purr-%ef%bb%bf\/\">purring<\/a> and rubbing against your leg?
