While you\u2019re gearing up for sleet and snow, we want to remind dog owners about the dangers of canine influenza (also known as dog flu). Keep reading to learn more about how to protect your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Canine Influenza?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canine influenza is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection caused by two influenza strains: H3N2 and H3N8. The H3N2 virus caused a national uproar when it emerged on the scene in 2015. In fact, hundreds of dogs were affected in the Chicagoland area. Both strains were present in birds before mutating and infecting dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like human flu, canine influenza is spread through coughing and sneezing and through contact with contaminated surfaces, such as food and water bowls or chew toys. The disease spreads rapidly in areas where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/199-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs tend to congregate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/local-summer-fun-with-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog parks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, doggie daycares, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-boarding-grooming.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grooming salons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and boarding kennels.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to Look for<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common symptoms of canine influenza include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watery eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pneumonia and other secondary infections (in extreme cases)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Cats Get the Flu?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been reports of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/cat-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becoming infected with canine influenza. If you have both dogs and cats in your home and your dog has been diagnosed with the flu, take all necessary precautions to keep them separated. Thoroughly clean all common areas with a diluted bleach solution or other cleaning product.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Importance of Vaccination<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main reasons the H3N2 strain has infected so many pets is that the virus is relatively new, meaning that any dog who has not been previously exposed (which is the majority of dogs) is highly susceptible to infection. Fortunately, a vaccine for H3N2 was introduced in the fall of 2015. When combined with the H3N8 vaccine (which has been on the market for many years), this is a pet\u2019s best chance at avoiding the illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We understand the concern that many owners share when it comes to over-vaccinating their pets. However, while the majority of infected dogs will only exhibit mild to moderate symptoms, more severe illness can develop (especially when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/blog\/senior-pet-health-and-wellness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beverlyhillsvets.com\/pet-care\/puppy-kitten-wellness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young pets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and those with compromised health).
